Player Profile: Kurt Ainsworth

I have one card of Kurt Ainsworth, from 2001 Topps.

Playing career: Kurt Ainsworth made his major league debut with San Francisco in 2001. By 2003, he was the Giants’ number five starter, going 5-4 with a 3.82 ERA before being traded to Baltimore mid-season for Sidney Ponson. The wheels fell off in Baltimore, as he posted ERAs of 11.57 and 9.68 there. His career was ultimately ended by shoulder injuries soon after.

My memories: Never heard of him outside of his baseball card.

Where he is now: With former major leaguer Joe Lawrence, he is the co-founder of the baseball school Big Leagues of Baton Rouge as well as Marucci Sports, which creates custom bats for over 100 major leaguers, including Jorge Posada and Mark Teixeira.

Google Autocomplete results: He is first when you type Kurt Ai, ahead of Kurt Aichler, a Houston architect. There do not appear to be any other prominent Kurt Ainsworths.

Coming up next: The next profile will be Darrel Akerfelds.
